FAQ!
Here in our F.A.Q. section we will answer the most commonly asked questions people have about keeping roaches.
Q: Do Blaptica Dubia bite?
A: NO! Blaptica Dubia do not bite. Among the larger species of roach such as Madagasgar Hissers, and the Australian Rhinocerous roach they do have little barbs on their legs for gripping purposes which sometimes pinch you in between your fingers while you're holding them. It doesn't hurt at all but can catch you off guard if you don't have any experience w/ handling roaches. THIS may be a reason why there is a misconception that all roaches bite.
Q: Can roaches climb?
A: YES and NO! When keeping roaches you need to do your homework and research them before considering a purchase. Find the correct species that suits your wants and needs. Climbers are easy to stop by smearing vasoline or applying packing tape around the top few inches of their enclosures. Blaptica Dubia CANNOT climb up smooth surfaces ie. glass & plastic.
Q: Can roaches fly?
A: Just as the above question the answer is YES and NO. Again you need to do your homework. However most species sold in the trade either can glide short distances or do not fly at all. Blapitca Dubia DO NOT fly.
Q: Are Blaptica Dubia poisonous?
A: NO! Yet just like any other animals that you come in contact w/, you should wash your hands thoroughly after working w/ them and their enclosures.
Q: Can Blaptica Dubia infest your house?
A: NO! Blaptica Dubia, if escaped from an enclosure, are not known to be able to survive anywhere in the continental U.S. w/ the exception of certain parts of Florida. Blaptica Dubia would not find the moisture, food, or environment (temps that constantly exceed 78 degrees) to stay alive.
I'm sure there are quite a few more questions that we would gladly answer but the above are the most commonly asked questions pertaining to keeping Blaptica Dubia. Please do not hesitate to contact us w/ any other questions you may have.
ROACHES VS OTHER FEEDERS!
Roaches are quickly becoming the "alternative" feeder to crickets, meal worms, & super worms for hobbyists and breeders of many animals around the world. After your first order of roaches we're sure that you will find that they are a suitable replacement to crickets and meal worms by far. Below The Roach Ranch has compiled a list of facts as to why the benefits of roaches far outweigh that of any other feeder insect.
Odor
This is the number 1 reason most people switch to roaches. Simply put, they have no odor! Unlike a few dozen crickets or meal worms who get that gnarly odor after a day or so (especially if one dies), you will be surprised to find that roaches don't smell one bit!
Noise
Now don't get us wrong. If you keep roaches in your bedroom you'll hear them scampering around when the lights go out. But kept in a separate room, basement, garage or shed you won't even know that they're around. No more pesky crickets chirping away keeping you up at night!
Escapees
Crickets are masterful at escaping, finding a hiding spot and then just driving you nuts. With roach species such as Blaptica Dubia you will not encounter this problem. They cannot climb glass or plastic, and they can't fly. Therefore when kept in a proper enclosure you won't have any escapees.
Economical
Forget about those unwanted trips to the pet store to buy feeders! If you are planning on setting up a breeding colony of roaches to feed your reptiles, arachnids, arthropods or any other animal that you keep, you will save yourself a ton of money! *Setting up your own colony.* The initial investment is a little more pricey than crickets and mealworms, but after your colony is established you'll never have to pay for another feeder again. Also it only takes one bin and about 5 minutes of your time throughout the week to check, feed, and perform any routine maintenance. No hide boxes, sorting, or timely maintenance as with crickets and super worms!
Nutrition
Roaches have a much higher meat to shell ratio than crickets, super worms, or meal worms. They also have double the protein and less fat than crickets and mealworms. When properly gutloaded, you can rest assure that your animal is getting a bigger more nutritious meal. * Lower chitin * - Chitin is the undigestable material that comes from the exoskeletons of insects and can cause impaction among certain species of lizards. Blaptica Dubia are a soft shelled roach that has less chitin crickets, mealworms and super worms making them much easier for your animals to digest.
Safety
Blaptica Dubia do not bite at all. Crickets can and will gnaw on your animal if left in their cage overnight.
Longevity
Unlike Crickets who only last a couple of months many species of roach have a shelf life of well over a year. Some of the larger species live for more than 4 years! A properly maintained colony can provide you w/ an assortment of sizes for your feeding needs indefinitely. |
